The Daedalus Quartet Performs at Scripps College

SoCal Chamber Music Workshop features acclaimed quartet and celebrates 40th anniversary

CLAREMONT – July 13, 2017

Praised by The New Yorker as “a fresh and vital young participant in what is a golden age of American string quartets,” the Daedalus Quartet has established itself as a leader among a new generation of string ensembles. Since winning first prize at the 2001 Banff International String Quartet Competition, the Daedalus Quartet has impressed critics and listeners alike with the security, technical finish, interpretive unity and sheer gusto of its performances. On Sunday, July 23 at 7:30 p.m., the Southern California Chamber Music Workshop (SCCMW) features the Daedalus Quartet, its ensemble-in-residence, in a free concert open to the public in Scripps College’s Balch Auditorium in Claremont, Calif. Quartets of Beethoven (Op. 18, No. 4 and Op. 59, No. 3) and Janáček (No. 1, “Kreutzer Sonata”) will be featured on the evening’s program. All guests are invited to a welcome reception following the performance. This concert opens SoCal Chamber Music Workshop’s summer 2017 session, which runs from July 23 to 29 and takes place on Scripps College campus.

SoCal Chamber Music Workshop, formerly known as the San Diego Chamber Music Workshop, celebrates its fortieth anniversary this year. Decades ago, San Diego-based ophthalmologist and amateur violinist Ron Goldman attended Interlochen Center for the Arts’ Adult Chamber Music Camp in Northwest Michigan. Inspired by his experience at Interlochen, Goldman started a chamber music workshop with his wife, Wynnona, in Southern California. Since its founding in 1978, the SoCal Chamber Music Workshop has garnered a reputation for its friendly intensity. This year, it boasts over 140 participants of different ages and from a variety of professions and geographies. SCCMW is designed for amateur and professional musicians ages 18 and up.

The workshop offers a fun, intensive and structured program that strives to deepen a musician’s enjoyment and understanding of chamber music, while improving their ability to play within a group. This year’s workshop week includes master classes, group rehearsals, coaching sessions, faculty concerts, evening programs and musical freelancing. Its large and diverse library contains classical and jazz works, as well as vocal-chamber music and new works written by local composers—Leslie La Barre, Thomas Flaherty, and Russell Steinberg.

This summer 2017 session, the workshop welcomes the Daedalus Quartet, as well as the Horszowski Trio and the Ensō String Quartet as ensembles-in-residence and coaches. Acclaimed musicians also join the workshop’s faculty roster—Associate Principal Cello of Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra Armen Ksajikian and violinist of the Grammy-winning Turtle Island Quartet David Balakrishnan, among others.

Remember to catch the Daedalus Quartet on Sunday, July 23 at 7:30 p.m. in Scripps College’s Balch Auditorium (1030 Columbia Ave. Claremont, CA 91711). Check out the concert event page here. The SoCal Chamber Music Workshop offers another concert by the Horszowski Trio. Same time and place, but on Tuesday, July 25. Like SCCMW on Facebook.
