July 21-27, 2019
Scripps College, Claremont, CA

The workshop begins Sunday afternoon with registration from 1:00 to 4:00 P.M and an orientation meeting. The evening will feature a special concert by one of our ensembles-in-residence. A reception and party will follow.

Mornings and early afternoons are for rehearsals, partly with your coach for the day, and partly without. In the mid-afternoon, all groups gather into mini-master classes with four groups for playing, coaching and discussion of the day’s assignments.

In addition to the (obligatory) daily coaching sessions, the week’s optional activities include conducted group readings of difficult literature, faculty lectures and performances, special guest presentations, and playing opportunities with the faculty. Ample spare time will be available in the evenings for musical freelancing.

The workshop is open to strings, winds, vocalists, and pianos. We will soon be accepting applications. The number of participants will be capped at 120. We admit players that collectively represent a range of playing levels. We only require that participants have the technical ability and musicality sufficient to enable effective group coaching and progress. If you have doubts as to whether you would fit in, don’t hesitate to fill out an application. Describe your playing and we will be happy to discuss if the workshop is for you!

For Instrumentalists: Any preformed group of quartet size or larger will be automatically accepted into the workshop depending on availability of space. These groups can study repertoire of their choice for all but one day of the week. On that day, each preformed group will break and join the general pool of workshop participants. All participants will receive a surprise piece and will play with a randomly-selected group of players.

If you apply as an individual, you will be assigned to a different group each day, with repertoire chosen by the coaches.

For Vocalists: There will be several days when we will offer chamber music with voice along with our regular instrumental program. We can only accept a small number of vocalists. Please contact us at for application information. Note that since you’ll be participating only a few days out of the week, the fees discussed below will be prorated.

Assigned Piece: Our optional “assigned piece” for this year will be the Haydn Quartet Op. 77 No. 2 in F major. Typically, many participants prepare the assigned piece in order to have one day devoted to studying this piece in depth. At workshop registration, you will be asked if you have chosen to prepare this piece, and we will try to assign you for at least one day to work with other similarly prepared participants. Your decision whether or not to prepare the piece will not affect your acceptance to the workshop.

Vocal Chamber Works: If you’re an instrumentalist interested in playing vocal chamber works, please mark that on the application form. We’ll do our best to pre-assign you in a vocal-chamber group. Please note that vocalists come very well prepared, and we expect the same from the instrumentalists.

Jazz-Chamber Works: If you’re interested in playing chamber jazz and jazz-inspired works, please mark the appropriate section on the application form.

If you’re applying as an individual pianist, please submit a list of chamber works you would be prepared to play.

Your costs to attend the workshop are split into two parts: tuition and room/board. Tuition covers the cost of Scripps music rooms, related facilities, faculty instruction. Tuition for 2019 is $425. Room and board covers on-campus meals from dinner Sunday night to breakfast Saturday morning, accommodations in a Scripps residence hall (single or double occupancy at the participant’s discretion), free covered parking and campus administrative services. All participants may bring guests and family members. Room and board for 2019 is $725 per person. Participants who won’t use campus housing will be charged $225 for campus administrative services and all meals throughout the week, except breakfast.

Ontario International Airport is 8 miles from campus. LAX is 50 miles from campus. Claremont’s train station is 1 mile away from campus.

We have a large library of chamber music repertoire available for you to borrow during the week. A current listing is available here. We welcome donations and bequests of your used sheet music!
